High Point Scenic Vista is an easy walk through an artistically designed, creatively spiraled trail to lofty 360 degree views of the Susquehanna River Valley.
York County’s High Point Scenic Vista is an interesting outdoor recreational space. Its aesthetic design is a refreshing and inspiring break from the dull daily grind.

We parked in the lot at 40.00107, -76.51982, off of Hilt Road. During our visit in mid-November, past peak autumn foliage, we were delighted by the blazing red of the maples at the trailhead. We passed the well-maintained information kiosk and map screening the portable toilet to begin the journey.

We were immersed in impressive views on the way up and all around at the High Point summit. Although it is only 772 feet above sea level, it gives the feel of being at the top of the world looking on the surrounding Susquehanna River Valley. You can see Chickies Rock and Susquehanna River passing between Columbia and Wrightsville to the northeast.

Looking to the southeast, the Susquehanna River broadens upstream of Safe Harbor Dam. This forms the boating playground, Lake Clark. You can see the Susquehanna curving around the prominent windmill-topped mount, Turkey Hill. With binoculars or a telescope, you can explore the countryside and even see as far as Lancaster city.

With the springy, winding trail, the 154-foot ascent from the parking lot couldn’t be easier. Note that because there is no cover to impede the views, it also means that there is no protection from the wind or sun. We experienced some hat-stripping gusts during our visit.

The spiraling Heritage Trail to the High Point summit and back is one mile.
There are also trails to the meadow below. The light blue blazed Mason-Dixon Trail also passes through the park.
High Point Scenic Vista Park is a cleverly designed, aesthetically appealing walk to some of the most scenic views in the area. It is a great outing for families with young children, and the Heritage Trail is easy enough for a stroller. Because there is no cover, you’ll want sun protection and winds can be high in breezy weather. Be sure to bring binoculars or a scope.
While you’re here, the panoramic view at Samuel S. Lewis State Park is a five minute drive away.
