Built:
1827
Coordinates:

Paradise Furnace, first named Trough Creek Furnace, located in present day Trough Creek State Park was built in 1827 by two Berks County iron masters, Reuben Trexler and his father-in-law, Jacob Lesher. Two bloomeries were previously built in the Trough Creek Gorge, first by George Knoblauch in 1789 and by the aforementioned Reuben Trexler in 1818. In 1832, John Savage of Philadelphia leased the furnace and renamed it Mary Ann Furnace and built Savage Forge. The furnace closed sometime in the 1850s. Demand for Iron during the Civil war spurred Horatio Trexler, son of Reuben to revive the furnace in 1865, renaming it Paradise Furnace. Due to the post-war economic downturn, Paradise furnace went out of blast permanently in 1869.
