Umbrella Rock in Elk County, PA is an exceptional oddity with an easy hike that should be on your outdoor adventure bucket list.
Umbrella Rock is an exceptional oddity of a rock formation in State Game Lands 44 of Elk County. It is easily accessible via State Game Lands dirt roads. There are multiple access points. We started at the Snowdrift Road Trailhead located at 41.37090, -78.69116, just off of the Route 219 (Boot Jack Road). We parked in the large lot and headed down the gated dirt road that runs on an old rail grade. After a little less than a mile the trail splits at 41.37106, -78.70585. We took the trail to the left that heads uphill.

The trail curves around a yellow pipe crossing at 41.37548, -78.70863 then splits twice. At the first spilt, the trail to the right leads toward some tanks. Don’t go that way, continue straight. At the second fork, just past the yellow pipes, head right. As we proceeded, we encountered a number of other roads branching off the main road. We stayed on the main road until we encountered a notable formation to explore, Baseball Cap Rock at 41.38145, -78.71333.

Encouraged by the unexpected find of Baseball Cap Rock, we continued about 0.15 miles on the dirt road to the turn off for Umbrella Rock at 41.38319, -78.71441. The path is on the left and is marked by a plastic yellow post. As we traveled into the woods, a massive rock cliff flanked by enormous boulders became clear through the woods.

Umbrella Rock itself is located on top of the boulder cliff. There are multiple paths leading up and around the cliff at 41.38282, -78.71741. On the way we took time to enjoy and explore the magnificent moss-adorned boulder stacks throughout the area.

We passed between the two-story rectangular boulders and walked up the formation from the rear. The larger formation to the right is spectacular with its multiple irregular overhangs, resembling a mushroomed bullet. There are narrow ledges to explore around the incredible formation.

You can stand right under Umbrella Rock. Be careful, because it is perched on the edge of the cliff. This would make a great backdrop for a group photo. What an excellent oddity!
