Rockland Furnace was built in 1832 by Andrew McCaslin. You can reach Rockland Furnace by parking at 41.23703, -79.74794 on Rockland Station Road and taking the well-worn path to the fantastic Freedom Falls. The furnace stack is just visible through the foliage the downstream of Freedom Falls.

After nearly 200 years, the moss-covered dressed stone furnace is one of the best preserved in the area.

You can still see the millrace and wheel pit that provided water power to operate the bellows.

According to A Guide to the Old Stone Blast Furnaces in Western Pennsylvania, Andrew McCaslin and his wife were tragically drowned when their barge loaded with pig iron, headed to Pittsburgh overturned in rapids. Rockland Furnace was later operated under several others until it blew out in 1854.
